LITTLE SUN SOLAR LAMP PROJECT

Solar Lamps in Southern African Communities

1.2 billion people worldwide live without electricity, in turn leaving kerosene lamps as the primary light source for off-grid communities. In rural Africa, families spend upwards of 30% of their income on kerosene which lets off dangerous carcinogen when burned. In looking to provide an economically and environmentally sustainable lighting alternative, donated funds will be distributed by Solar for Life to the implementors at Little Sun to provide South African villages with solar lamps. The unique patented design is weather resistant and lasts up to 10 hours on a 5 hour charge. With over one lamp being provided per item purchased on Verea, each purchase that you make directly supports a family in need.

LIFE STRAW WATER FILTERATION

Improving water filteration systems in Sub-Saharan Africa

In the daily life of a child in off-grid South Africa, the average student will miss 43 days of school due to water-born illnesses caught from consuming unsterile drinking water. Unfortunately, the children don’t have a choice but to continue to drink the unsafe water, do to its scarcity in the rural landscape. In looking to provide children in these communities with the opportunity to consume safe drinking water in a manner that is convenient and effective, an African organization called Life Straw responded by creating their uniquely designing high-volume portable water filters. The purchase of a single Verea product provides at least one Life Straw water purifier to a child in off-grid Africa, providing them with an astonishing 18,000L of pure water per filter and allowing them to stay healthy and attend school without concern of illness.

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

Rebuilding Schools for Nepalese Children

On April 25, 2015 a 8.1 magnitude shook the country of Nepal. The earthquake destroyed historical sites and flattened villages, leaving over 9 000 dead, 25 000 injured and thousands homeless. The event affected over 8 million people, 1.8 million of which were children. Approximately 8,000 schools were destroyed. Temporary classrooms are held up by bamboo planks, and covered with plastic tarps on unpaved ground. The Non-Resident Nepali Association of Canada (NRN-Canada) and London’s Cross Cultural Learning Centre have joined hands to rebuild the Mahendra Lila Higher Secondary School in Gorkha, Nepal. By supporting their project, you help them reach their goal of $58 000! Read more about the initiative here.

EMPOWERING AFRICAN WOMEN

Tiwale Entrepreneurship Program

Tiwale empowers women to develop sustainable ventures that transform communities in Malawi from poverty-stricken to entrepreneur-vital. Its community based organization uplifts women through micro-loans, business education and school grants. Founded in 2012, the organization has already trained over 150 women and awarded loans to 33 – all of whom successfully established businesses and repaid their loans on time. The micro-loans program has been successful, however the income change is not solid to fully shift one from the poverty line. There is a need for new skills development and tapping into markets that are undersupplied in the country. Tiwale is motivated to contribute towards the community’s market development by establishing an African-Print fabric dye facility. 30% of the sales go to the women who created the fabrics and the other 70 percent reimburses our organization’s costs and supports initiatives such as our education program. Read more about their plans here!
